Equity Charter formally launched at Rewired 2025

The Equity Charter was formally launched at Digital Health Rewired 2025 last week, sharing 10 principles to tackle discrimination in the sector.

The Equity Charter was first introduced at Rewired 2024 by Dr Ayesha Rahim, clinical lead for digital mental health, Transformation Directorate at NHS England, Victoria Betton, director at Peopledotcom and Hassan Chaudhury, commercial director at DATA-CAN.

The 10 principles are:

1: Each of us commits to standing up for equity

2: Leaders, teams and organisations champion equity

3: Equity embedded into policy and practice

4: Equity at the centre of digital strategy and transformation

5: Digital teams represent the wider workforce and communities they serve

6: Equity embedded in research and innovation

7: Digital products and services are designed equitably

8: Ethical procurement and contracting promotes equity

9: Equity in the use of data and design of algorithms

10: Equitable health and wellbeing outcomes for underserved communities

Each of the principles have a series of actions underpinning it, to help organisations and individuals to put them into practice.

Rahim chaired the session on the Digital Transformation Stage at Rewired25 on 18 March 2025, beginning with a speech outlining the charter’s principles and the aspirations moving forward.

“While we’re launching today, today is only the beginning,” she told the audience at the NEC in Birmingham.

The Equity Charter is backed by over 1,000 individuals and over 60 organisations, including Digital Health.

The principles were initially revealed in October 2024, before receiving feedback from signatories and supporters.

After Rahim’s speech, a panel discussion took place involving Joy Warmington, chief executive of brap, MaryAnn Ferreux, chief medical officer at Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex, and Thomas Webb, founder and CEO at Ethical Healthcare Consulting.

Webb stressed to those in attendance that “if you haven’t built equity into your business plan, you’re not going to do it” and that “this isn’t just a tick box exercise, it’s a culture change”.
